Kitchen Design

From kitchen cupboards to the appliances, here's how to ensure a successful renovation. Renovating your kitchen will add enjoyment and value to your home. Here are a few steps to consider when you're updating your kitchen.

Practicality
If you have a good kitchen layout, keep it. Don't move the basin, stove or windows around, this will add substantially to the cost. However, if a previous design flaw was the reason for the renovation, then correct it, and consider consulting a professional, so the same mistake is not made twice. What looks good on paper might not be great in real life.

Use Quality materials
Buy the best you can afford. No sense in spending a packet now, only to be redoing your kitchen again. Quality drawer slides and hinges mean cupboard doors will stay closed and drawers won't stick. Stay away from drawers that are stapled together or made of particleboard. For cupboard interiors, wood veneer is more durable than MDF, melamine or laminate wood.

High ceilings and kitchen cupboards
If you have high ceilings, choose kitchen cupboards that go all they way to the ceiling. They offer far more storage, and will enable you to use the extra wall space for open shelving or even artwork. There are lots of options that can be considered to remove the dullness of a flat, ceiling area. Put a bulkhead section over selected areas of the kitchen to create a multi-level appearance.

Cupboard door finishes

Countertops

Lighting

No or low maintenance
Natural surfaces with texture like slate, brick or marble - are more difficult to clean but will appear clean. Smooth surfaces in light colours, such as white laminate countertops or ceramic floors, are easy to clean but look dirty easily. Stainless steel, it's not easy to keep smudge-free.

Instead of lots of kitchen appliances and gadgets, consider selecting a few reliable basics.

About the dining room
A clever design, plus the appropriate lighting and furniture, will let you adapt the room's atmosphere to suit any occasion.

Add interest
Your kitchen should reflect you, not look like a showroom. Before designing the space, search for a piece of unique furniture and use it in your design -- a room full of floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall kitchen cupboards looks uninspired.
